Repurposing: An Urban Dialogue
As part of the project „Repurposing: An Urban Dialogue,“ I explored the interplay between objects and urban spaces. The aim was to observe and document people’s reactions to the unusual placement of everyday objects in public areas for the duration of one day. The students placed various objects in existing urban settings and filmed the reactions of passersby: How are the objects used? Are they admired, ignored, or even rejected?
In my case, I decided to place a mirror in the marketplace. From a distance, I filmed how people reacted to the mirror. Some stopped, looked at their reflection, and took the opportunity for self-reflection. Others passed by without paying attention to the object. Some noticed the camera and interacted in surprising ways, adding an additional dynamic to the dialogue between object and space. The mirror not only prompted individual reactions but also led to interactions between people. Some passersby started talking to each other, laughed at the unexpected object, or pointed out the mirror to others.
This project illustrates how objects in urban spaces influence not only architecture but also people’s behavior and perception. It invites us to view public spaces in a new light and see everyday elements from a different perspective.
