RWTH City window

RWTH Aachen aims to make its sustainability-related activities visible throughout the city by selecting various locations on campus for a „Sustainability at RWTH“ tour. Each site will focus on a specific topic, presented through a display case. The goal is to provide campus users with information about current events and activities in the areas of operations, research, teaching, and social engagement, as well as to offer opportunities for participation.

As part of the elective module, students worked in pairs to develop a comprehensive concept for the city display windows and designed a sculptural exhibition structure (2x2x2 meters) that functions as a display case.

This structure will not only serve to convey information but will also relate to sustainability themes through its design by being constructed from reused materials with ecological properties. It will enhance the quality of stay and create green spaces. Euro crates, commonly used in the food industry and agriculture for storing food, are made from food-safe plastic but lose their quality over time and need to be discarded. These crates are reliably stackable and have a high load-bearing capacity, making them suitable for creating spatial sculptures. They only need to be connected to each other horizontally with a force fit and vertically to protect against theft or misuse. This forms an island where people can sit, plants can be grown, and children can play. The integrated wooden display case provides ample space for displaying information or objects.
