Reassembly of the UCLouvain university campus
As part of this project, we focused on the comprehensive transformation of the UCLouvain University campus in Brussels. Our goal was to capture and document the entire campus in order to develop innovative and sustainable transformations. These transformations aimed to enhance both the technological and ecological aspects of the campus, making it a greener and more nature-connected place.
At the beginning of the project, we were unsure of where our journey would lead. The entire year-long project process was highly experimental, and new ideas emerged from the interactions within the group of 11 Master’s students.
Initially, we documented the entire campus by creating detailed floor plans, a model in Blender, and compiling component lists. This comprehensive inventory formed the foundation for our further planning and designs.
Subsequently, each of us selected a location within the campus where we intended to make an intervention based on the existing conditions. The concept behind these interventions was to integrate technology and nature. Each intervention was designed to create a space that serves both technological functions and as a habitat for an animal. The aim was not only to functionally extend the campus but also to make it more environmentally friendly and natural.
For the redesign and renovation, we primarily used the modules and components already available on the campus. The use of new components was kept to a minimum. The construction process involved a continuous interaction of removal and addition.
The utopian vision of these transformations was presented at the end of the project in a 25-minute film with storyline. The film documented the conceptual interventions and their impact on the campus, connecting all 11 individual projects into a cohesive whole.
